Smoke free states

Both smokers and non-smokers have reacted to the smoking ban with mixed feelings. In several states people are not allowed to light up a cigarette in their favorite bar or restaurant. Smokers in general have expressed the feeling that they of course do not mind having to adjust their habits to make sure that the people around them are not bothered by the fact that they are smoking. However many smokers also feel that they are being curtailed and limited in their preferences and the fact that most bars and restaurants (depending on the state that they are in) do not even have ' smoking areas' anymore has not made going out a more fun experience for people. As a result many bars have reported losses due to the fact that less people are visiting their businesses.

Except for businesses that now cannot allow people to smoke anymore on their premises as a result of the new smoking law there are now also certain states that want to change their local laws even more. The plan is to make certain states completely smoke free. This in effect would mean that people are simply not allowed to smoke anywhere anymore except for in their own home. It is likely that taxes on cigarettes will increase even more which makes smoking less popular and some politicians are even mentioning making the medical care for smokers suffering from conditions caused by smoking more expensive.

If smoke Free states ever become a reality it is very likely that the states will see a big change in resident numbers. More people will be moving out of the state and of course some fervent non-smokers will probably be moving in. The negative comments on ideas such as these do not come from smokers only. There are plenty of people who do not smoke that agree with the smoking ban in bars and restaurants but do not think that smokers should be limited to smoking in their own home only. Just like with the law changes on smoking and bans in public places the general idea of the public is to just wait and see what happens. In other countries where a smoking ban in bars has been introduced, such as Great Britain, there has been a noticeable decline in visitor numbers and figures show that people are spending more time entertaining friends at home instead of going to a bar in the evening.
