Smoking not only affects the individual but also those who are nearby him/her at the time of smoking. This is referred to as passive smoking. In other words the people around are affected as much or a little less than the smoker. It is important to know the health effects of passive smoking.
Overview of Passive Smoking
Passive smoking can cause lot of harm to the non smokers for no fault of theirs. A woman living with a smoker husband, a child or an adult in whose family one or more person happens to be a smoker, and even smoking in public and work places are all classic examples of passive smoking. Passive smoking is becoming a significant issue and many nations are enacting laws to see to that at least the evil effects of smoking do not affect a non-smoker.

Passive smoking referred as second hand smoking or environmental tobacco smoking, which is achieved by the mixture of mainstream smoke and side stream smoke. Main stream smoke refers to the smoke exhaled by the smoker while side stream smoke refers to the smoke that is mixed is caused in the environment by the burning of a cigarette or cigarettes.
Passive Smoking and Children
Children are easily affected by passive smoking if their parents or other members in their house happen to be smokers. Owing to the delicate system and soft muscles they are prone to health hazards and infection is likely to spread at a faster rate than the other. Another problem with children is that they spend most of their time in their own houses. They have no choice to escape from the smoke unlike the adults who can choose to stroll along in a non smoky place or ignore visiting a smoky place.

Children breathe quickly when compared with adults because their nostrils are very small. Therefore they can inhale lots of poisonous substances than adults. Children affected by passive smoking suffer from diseases like asthma, neurological impairment. By and large it affects their immunity system. In case of infants they are likely to die if they are affected badly. In general it increases the rate of sudden infant death syndrome.
Passive Smoking and the Workplace
Passive smoking in workplace affects the colleague, employer and even the customer. When a smoker’s colleague spends lot of time with the smoker during the course of his work his health will b drastically affected. Since a group of people in an organization don’t inhale or exhale fresh air and already pollute the atmosphere this can only add to the misery.

The employer will have to incur lot of medical costs when his employees fall ill. He may have to face decline in productivity as and when the sick employees take leave. This could even affect his profits or lose prospective customers. The employees (both smokers and non smokers) will not be able to achieve the targets. This may affect their promotion and incentives.

If the employer happens to spend a lot of time with them he is also going to be equally affected health wise. Similarly a customer who visits a shop will be affected due to the smoke in the environment. It also deserves to be mentioned that passive smoking disturbs the concentration of the colleague’s employer and customer. As a result the employees may not deliver the best while the employer may not be able to pay attention to the actual problems and core issues and the customer may be unsatisfied.
