Chronic Bronchitis

Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of chronic bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the lung airways and when cigarette smoke is inhaled into the lungs, it irritates the airways so that they produce mucus. Mucus starts to block the airways and makes it difficult for a person to get air into the lungs. Chronic bronchitis can cause a phlegm producing cough, difficulty breathing and sensations of tightness or restriction in the chest. If you are a smoker, chronic bronchitis will be easily diagnosed by the doctor and may require tests to see if the lungs are damaged such as blowing into a machine in order to test how much air is in the lungs.

A person suffering with chronic bronchitis should stop smoking immediately as this will allow the lungs to begin a healing process as well as the other health benefits associated with quitting smoking. Especially while a person has chronic bronchitis, giving up smoking will help them breathe more easily. Care should also be taken to avoid aerosols and paint fumes. Chronic bronchitis is usually treated with an inhaler that contains medicine that helps to open the airways of the lungs. There are also medicines in pill form and steroids to help decrease the symptoms. Chronic bronchitis increases the risks of lung infections so it is better to clear this up as soon as possible.
